As we celebrate Genderfluid Visibility Week, it’s a great time to enjoy TV shows that embrace genderfluid identities, challenge the traditional gender binary, and feature characters or actors who identify as genderfluid. Representation in media plays a powerful role in creating visibility and fostering understanding, so why not use this week to binge some incredible series that highlight gender diversity?
Billions
Billions follows the high-stakes world of hedge funds and the legal battles that ensue between ambitious billionaires and the US Attorney’s Office. The show introduces Taylor Mason, portrayed by Asia Kate Dillon, who becomes a pivotal character as the first openly non-binary character in a major series. Taylor navigates a cutthroat environment, pushing back against traditional gender roles while asserting their identity.
Orange Is The New Black
Set in a women’s prison, Orange Is The New Black explores the lives of inmates, focusing on their backstories and the relationships they build inside. Ruby Rose plays Stella Carlin, who captures the attention of main character Piper, sparking a complex relationship. The series dives deep into themes of identity, sexuality, and societal norms, showcasing the fluidity of gender and attraction. Ruby Rose has been open about their genderfluid identity throughout their career.
Younger
Younger tells the story of Liza Miller, a 40-year-old woman who pretends to be in her 20s to land a job in publishing. As she navigates her new life, she encounters various characters, including Josh, played by Nico Tortorella. While Josh’s character doesn’t explicitly explore gender fluidity on-screen, Tortorella’s real-life advocacy and identity add depth to the show. The series captures the complexity of modern relationships and the importance of self-discovery.
The Owl House
The Owl House is an animated series that follows Luz, a teenage girl who stumbles upon a magical world and becomes a student of witchcraft. One of the standout characters is Raine Whispers, who identifies as non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. Raine serves as a mentor to Luz and is a significant figure within the show’s magical realm. Their character brings visibility to non-binary identities in children’s animation, demonstrating that fluidity can be celebrated in all genres.
