What was the inspiration behind this film? And why do you think it’s important to showcase these themes in LGBTQIA filmmaking?
The story of Divine Intervention was inspired by the random interactions of the kindness of strangers in 2021, during my first year in London moving from Seattle. In moments of loneliness and isolation in a big new city, these seemingly mundane encounters with angelic-like souls would make my days lighter. As this film is in the fantasy-romance-drama genre, I think it’s important to showcase these escapist, fun, surreal themes in LGBTQIA filmmaking because it’s rare to have queer fantasy stories that can take the audience to another world in the way that fantasy stories do – you can turn your brain off and escape for a little while – representation in these genres is important.

Queer stories are rarely told. What do you hope audiences take away from your film?
Human connection and the overlooked beauty in the every day have always been fascinating storytelling subjects, and it’s always fun to magnify moments through a surreal or escapist lens. As a solo second-generation Asian-American child to overworked and often absent immigrant-refugee parents, I would find company and comfort in the worlds and characters of television programmes and films. I hope that Divine Intervention can be that source for an LGBTQIA audience. Divine Intervention is a celebration of love, joy, fun, and hope – feelings I hope people will feel when they watch the film.
