Queer East, a cross-disciplinary festival that showcases LGBTQIA cinema and live arts from East and South East Asia, is taking a series of film screenings to Brighton.
From 29 October – 2 November, the On The Road 2024 tour will set up shop at Brighton’s Dukes at Komedia to host the screenings.
One of the films shown will be China’s A Song Sung Blue, nominated for the Queer Palm at Cannes last year, which follows a teenage girl who becomes infatuated with the daughter of her father’s assistant. There will also be a 50th anniversary screening of Japan’s Bye Bye Love and The Last Year Of Darkness, a Chinese-American documentary.
The festival was established five years ago in response to the systemic lack of Asian representation in cinema and theatre. It aims to amplify the voices of Asian communities and challenge the conventional norms, labels and stereotypes associated with queer Asian portrayals.
More information can be found on the festival’s website.
