The official trailer for the third season of Heartstopper has dropped. It reveals that this season is going to explore the mental health issues faced by multiple characters including Charlie (Joe Locke), Nick (Kit Connor) and Elle (Yasmin Finney).

The second season of the hit queer show tackled issues such as Charlie’s eating disorder, Nick’s anxiety about coming out and what it’s like to experience homophobia from a parent through Darcy (Kizzy Edgell). The new trailer for the next season makes it clear that the show will continue to explore similar important themes.

Early on in the trailer, Charlie’s eating disorder is highlighted and will likely be a core part of the storyline as Nick tries to support him. The trailer also showed that other characters will also be facing some mental health issues. This includes Elle, whose feelings of gender dysphoria come back after getting intimate with her boyfriend.

It is likely that we will also see more of Darcy. Last season, we learnt that their mother is homophobic, making home life quite difficult for Darcy. But, the trailer contains a clip of the Heartstopper gang cutting off Darcy’s hair, while they grin from ear to ear, suggesting a happier storyline this season. A behind-the-scenes snippet released earlier this year seemed to show the character with a mullet and chest binder. Some fans have speculated that this means Darcy will publicly identify as non-binary, like actor Kizzy Edgell, at some point this season.

The third season of Heartstopper will premiere on 3 October. Creator Alice Oseman has said that while the show will always “celebrate the joyful”, she is excited to take this season in a new, “mature” direction.

“We are doing something that will feel very different, and people will be surprised, and I can’t wait.”
