“If you don’t know who I am then what the fuck are you doing here?” says Miriam Margolyes as a way of introducing herself. Because it’s true. The audience is eager to find out if this national treasure (and DIVA cover star) is as wonderful as she appears onscreen.

Miriam Margolyes’ Margoyles & Dickens: The Best Bits at the Edinburgh Fringe is a show of two distinct halves, showcasing the legendary actor’s impressive talents alongside her now-iconic personality. The first half is a treat for literary enthusiasts, as Margolyes brings to life her favourite excerpts from the works of Charles Dickens, whom she considers England’s greatest writer. Her readings of scenes from Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, and Oliver Twist are a testament to her enduring vocal power and ability to inhabit multiple characters. These moments highlight Miriam’s deep affinity for Dickens, capturing his characters with flair and wit.

The 25 minutes which focus on Dickens are utterly glorious and leave the audience hungry for more. The show then transitions into more familiar territory for Miriam’s fans. Attendees are treated to a Q&A session with the star where she fields questions about politics, difficult co-stars, and even her favourite orgasm. Her candidness and humour are met with waves of affection from the audience and are guaranteed to make you go “Oh Miriam!”

For fans who have watched Miriam’s most iconic interviews on talk shows, many of these stories will be familiar to you. But it’s certainly something to witness them being told in person.

Margoyles & Dickens: The Best Bits is at Pleasance at EICC until 15 August at 4pm
