It’s July 2017. The first episode of The Bold Type hits the small screen and BFFs and co-workers Jane, Kat and Sutton strut their way into viewers’ hearts around the world. These three millennial women work for Scarlet, a prestigious women’s magazine. The show was filmed during Donald Trump’s presidency and didn’t shy away from addressing important issues such as the #MeToo movement, LGBTQIA rights, gun control, racism, fertility treatment and more.
The series ran for four years and we said a bittersweet goodbye to The Bold Type in June 2021. But what have our favourites been up to since saying farewell to these iconic characters?
Aisha Dee (Kat Edison)
Starting things off strong with my personal favourite character, social media dynamo Kat Edison. Throughout the series, we got to see Kat explore different elements of her identity, from her complicated feelings around her Black mixed-race identity and her bisexual coming out journey. It was great to see Kat use social media for her social justice work both inside and outside of Scarlet.
Since saying goodbye to Kat, Aisha has appeared in a range of films and TV shows. She’s proven herself to be an actor who has range. She portrayed Cecilia in the 2022 comedy/horror Sissy, she played Lili Reinhart’s onscreen bestie in Look Both Ways and most recently portrayed Phoebe Rook in four episodes of Safe Home. She is also set to play Jenny in an upcoming action film titled One More Shot that is currently in production.
Meghann Fahy (Sutton Brady)
It was great to see Sutton grow in confidence throughout the seasons. She worked her way up as an assistant for three years before moving to the fashion department where she’d pursue her dreams. She’d go on to become a stylist and this is where she felt her true calling was. Sutton grew up in a small town before moving to the bustling city to pursue her dreams. Her on-again-off-again relationship with Richard Hunter was quite the dramatic ride, but I won’t spoil how things ended for the two lovers.
Since closing the doors to Sutton’s impressive wardrobe, Meghann has taken on some impressive roles. She joined the cast of The White Lotus’ second season as Daphne Sullivan. I know I can speak for many a DIVA when I say we were all rooting for Daphne to have a sapphic moment with Aubrey Plaza’s Harper Spiller. She also starred as Jackie Dennon in the 2024 horror film Your Monster. She’s also set to star in some upcoming projects: The Perfect Couple, Drop and The Unbreakable Boy which are all in different stages of production.
Katie Stevens (Jane Sloan)
Katie has garnered many LGBTQIA fans for her role as Karma in the sapphic show Faking It. Like Kat and Sutton, Jane’s career took many twists and turns. She wrote about a range of topics from politics to sex and it was an interesting way for the show to explore different feminist topics. We also got to see a lot of Jane’s journey with fertility and female healthcare.
Since saying goodbye to Jane, Katie has portrayed Lindsey Willows and Gwen on TV series CSI: Vegas and Fantasy Island respectively. She also portrayed Melissa Norwood in the Christmas romcom, A Christmas Open House back in 2022. At the time of writing, Katie has no upcoming screen projects that are publicly known about. Her Instagram timeline is full of pictures of her living her best life in her new role of motherhood.
Nikohl Boosheri (Adena El Amin)
Nikohl’s portrayal of out and proud Muslin lesbian, photographer and artist Adena was one of my favourite parts of the show. Like many queers around the globe, I swooned over her friends-to-lovers romance with Kat.
Fans can see Nikohl in the film Alia’s Birth where she plays Tess and she’s taken on roles in upcoming projects Afghan Dreamers and Adjunct.
Melora Hardin (Jacqueline Carlyle)
And of course, we have to talk about Scarlet’s editor-in-chief, Jacquline. Did you know her character was inspired by Cosmopolitan’s real-life editor-in-chief Joanna Coles? Jacquline’s working relationship with all three of the main ladies was great to see, especially hers and Jane’s.
Since saying goodbye to Jacquline, Melora has starred alongside The L Word’s Arienne Mandi in the 2022 romcom Love, Classified. You can also see her play Dr. Elizabeth Simmons in the 2023 film Clock and as Mabel Montgomery-Mayflower in Golden Vanity. Last year she also portrayed Trudy Monk in Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie. We can’t wait to see what the actor does next.
Stephen Conrad Moore (Oliver Grayson)
After Stephen’s dazzling performance as Scarlet’s Head of Fashion Department Oliver Grayson, the character was upgraded from recurring character to series regular from the second season onwards. It was great to see a Black gay man represented onscreen. While it was great to see him guide and mentor Sutton, I was particularly moved by his rapport with Kat and how he helped her process different aspects of her identity.
Since saying farewell to Scarlet’s fashion department, Stephen has appeared in one episode of The Breaking Bad spin-off Better Caul Saul and you can look forward to seeing him play Harry in Deadlocked: Dad Of The Dead. The latter is currently in production and expected to release in 2025.
Alexis Floyd (Tia Clayton)
One of my biggest grievances with The Bold Type is that Kat and Tia didn’t end up together. I shipped them so hard. Unfortunately the timing just wasn’t right. I loved seeing Tia work as Kat’s campaign manager and the similarities and differences the two characters shared.
Since leaving the show Alexis has taken on a range of impressive roles. She has appeared in an episode of Apple TV’s Dickinson. And this isn’t the only TV series we’ve seen her in since. She’s portrayed Sherrie in Way Down, Neff in Inventing Anna, Deandra Minton in The Good Fight and Dr. Simone Griffith in Grey’s Anatomy. Alexis can also be seen in the short films Make It Easy, Gwafi and Play Hard. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
Alex Paxton-Beesley (Eva Rhodes)
Alex joined the cast as Kat’s controversial love interest Eva Rhodes in the show’s fourth season. While some fans did ship this pairing, many thought it was out of character for Kat – a proud Black biracial bisexual liberal and advocate for social justice – to be swooning over Eva, a fierce Republican.
Since saying goodbye to Eva, Alex has appeared on show’s such as Sex/Life, Murdoch Mysteries, Astrid And Lilly Save The World and Chucky. We’ve also seen her play Ally in The Holiday Swap, Megan in Close To You and Olivia in Our Christmas Mural.
