“When you read, you’re putting yourself into other people’s shoes, able to see things more clearly, and avoid making any undue assumptions”
BY DYLAN MANN-HAZELL
Roya Shahilow, Chief of Staff to the CEO of Synechron, actively embraces authentic allyship in both her personal and professional life. Raised in a small UK town, her early fascination with exploration and diverse experiences led her to a remarkable career spanning multiple continents and corporate roles.
Starting her career at Bloomberg in Singapore, Roya immersed herself in the finance markets and technology sectors. This experience provided her with vital knowledge and a solid foundation for her subsequent roles at Synechron. Here, she progressed from business consultancy to leading the UK HR team during the challenging COVID-19 period, showcasing her adaptability, resilience, and commitment to personal growth.
“Not only has Synechron supported my progression within the company, but they have also allowed me to explore a number of opportunities to learn and understand where my skills lie,” Roya reflects. Even though it was early in her career, her time in Singapore profoundly impacted her worldview and professional trajectory. Exposure to various cultures instilled a deep appreciation for the unique benefits diversity brings, expanding her global perspective and reinforcing a continuous learning mindset.
Roya thrived in a people-centric role at Synechron, drawn to the company’s emphasis on employee development and inclusivity. This environment allowed her to pursue a postgraduate qualification while excelling in her job responsibilities, ultimately leading her to her current position as Chief of Staff.
“The people at Synechron are what makes the organization special,” Roya notes. “We’re lucky to have a supportive global team and numerous groups that foster personal and organizational growth while making a tangible impact.”
Synechron distinguishes itself with its dedication to creating a welcoming, inclusive environment. Initiatives like the employee-run “Synclusive” DEI group and various global events promote a sense of belonging and empowerment among staff. This culture not only enriches the professional environment but also contributes to the personal fulfilment of employees like Roya.
A central aspect of Roya’s passion for allyship is her dedication to continuous learning, self-reflection, and advocacy for others. She proactively educates herself through diverse readings and participation in workshops on topics like microaggressions, demonstrating her commitment to understanding and empathizing with different experiences.
“I take the time to continually educate myself about people with different experiences and backgrounds,” Roya explains. “For example, I love to read books written from other people’s perspectives in order to understand, empathize, and relate to them. I also think this is a great bias checker! When you read, you’re putting yourself into other people’s shoes, able to see things more clearly, and avoid making any undue assumptions.”
By fostering an environment of open communication and inclusivity, Roya ensures that every voice is heard and valued, making Synechron a more diverse, respectful, and supportive workplace. She places a lot of focus on the importance of being approachable, advocating for marginalized voices, and addressing inappropriate behaviour promptly.
“Living abroad inspired me to always be curious and ready for the next big adventure!” Roya remarks, capturing the spirit of her ongoing journey.
