Heartstopper by name, heartstopper by nature! For two angsty seasons, we have followed the developing friendship-into-romance story of Nick and Charlie. After season two had us hanging off the edge of the cliff with Charlie’s text message teaser, we are fully ready to receive the next season, season three in all its glory. Now, season three is on its merry way after season two’s cliffhanging draft text message. Will he send it? Won’t he? We see clearly in the new season’s trailer that those three little but very big words have not yet been uttered, typed or sent, however, we have the whole new season to make up for the time spent wondering.
Originally based on Alice Oseman’s webcomic, Heartstopper’s leading Queeros, Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, blossomed onto our screens with their budding high school romance back in 2022. But what is in store for the next and future series?
If you’ve read volumes one through five you may already have an inkling, but here is what we know is coming up in season three which will be released on 3 October 2024.
Awkward AF and adorable
Watching the trailer, it was an all too familiar situation witnessing Nick and Charlie’s awkward “I’m so into you that I don’t really know what to say, so I’ll say something dumb” exchange. Their cute little compliments about each other’s clothing would have been perfectly rounded off with the addition of a snort-laugh. We’ve all been there, right? Anyway, I don’t believe this made it into the script but time will tell. It was also exciting to hear an exclusive audio snippet of Billie Eilish’s new single BIRDS OF A FEATHER, from her new album HIT ME HARD AND SOFT, lending itself to the popular culture trends and themes that the series embraces.

Fans will be excited to know that Season three looks very close to staying true to the books with filming recently wrapping on a beach and another scene, perhaps a declaration of love, filmed on a street corner, mirroring scenes painted in Oseman’s novellas.
The story
A major storyline will involve Nick coming out on Instagram. After much self-discovery, Nick shared his relationship with Charlie and his bisexuality online. His brave move will have significant consequences, especially given the mixed reactions at their school. Nick’s journey of coming out will also touch on the impact of homophobia, something Charlie is already battling.

Charlie is dealing with his own issues related to food and perhaps this may become the most sensitive topic in season three. Earlier seasons have hinted at Charlie’s struggle with an eating disorder, particularly during stressful times. This issue becomes more pronounced, leading to a significant health crisis and a deeply concerned Nick, searches for ways to help him. This culminates in Charlie seeking professional help and beginning therapy, a challenging but vital step for his recovery. This storyline will heavily impact Nick and Charlie’s relationship, ultimately strengthening their bond.
According to Netflix, Nick and Charlie’s relationship will deepen as we watch our favourites face their biggest emotional challenges yet.
What about the other characters?
Season three will also show its strength by expanding the stories of some of Heartstopper’s side characters. This includes Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney). After much romantic tension, they finally started dating in the latter half of season two. However, trouble looms as Elle’s acceptance into a prestigious art school means she will be miles away, testing their young relationship.
Characters Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) and Tara (Corinna Brown) will face difficulties stemming from Darcy’s troubled home life. Her reckless behaviour, a result of her mother’s homophobia and abuse, creates tension. Tara’s struggle to support Darcy will be a key focus, adding depth to their storyline.

Isaac (Tobie Donovan), who discovered he’s asexual in season two, will likely continue exploring his identity. His journey is an important aspect of the series, highlighting an often-overlooked aspect of the LGBTQIA community.
Season three promises to continue tackling important issues with the heartwarming and tender touch that Heartstopper is known for. Fans can expect an emotional journey as characters grow and face new challenges, with the series maintaining its signature hopeful and uplifting tone.
New faces?
We will also see an introduction of a few new characters such as Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton) will play Jack Maddox, a Greek and Roman language and literature specialist who is sending Charlie’s heart a flutter on Instagram. Hayley Atwell (Agent Carter) will feature as Nick’s Aunt Diane, ready to give him some tough advice on his relationship with Charlie, and Eddie Marsan (The Gentlemen) as Charlie’s straight-talking therapist Geoff.
Who’s not returning?
Unfortunately, Nick’s mum, played by Olivia Coleman, will not be returning to the show due to a very busy schedule, and Sebastian Croft, who played Ben Hope, will also not be returning for season three, for reasons speculated but not fully confirmed.

In conclusion…
If season two has anything to go by, season three has some big high-heeled boots to fill.
The former season touched upon some pretty sensitive and important subjects including coming out, mental health and self-harm and continued to raise awareness of the underrepresented voices within the LGBTQIA community such as the introduction of a new trans Naomi.
In an interview with Metro, Oseman said mental health will be a “big element” in season three: “We’re going to continue to look at that in a big way and explore how that affects Nick and Charlie’s relationship, and all of the other friendships in the show.”
So yes, expect emotion but also significant character developments, allowing us viewers to connect with these characters on a much deeper level. I, for one, can’t wait to see how Nick and Charlie’s blossoming love story continues to grow and inspire limitless true love in all its forms.
