We fell in love with Hannah Einbinder when we saw her portray TV writer Ava Daniels in the HBO Max series Hacks. It was great to see her share a screen with renowned comedian Jean Smart who plays Deborah Vance.
Hannah Einbinder has become a much-loved queer celebrity in recent years. Here are five facts to know about the Emmy-nominated standup comedian and actor.
She has comedic roots
Before acting, Einbinder honed her skills on the stand-up circuit. As the daughter of Laraine Newman, an original cast member of Saturday Night Live, lols really do run in her blood. She began performing in LA in her early 20s, was featured on Variety’s best new up-and-coming comedians to watch list in 2019, and made her TV debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2020.
Hacks is her first acting role on a TV show
Despite lacking confidence initially, Hannah has spoken honestly about how her role in Hacks has pushed her to trust her acting abilities. This leap of faith, away from the immediate feedback of stand-up, has resulted in multiple Emmy nominations for her work.
She’s bisexual
Hannah is bisexual and regularly talks about her sexuality in her standup routines. Speaking to Variety about being cast as Ava in Hacks, she said, “She was always queer. It was in the character breakdown, which I was so relieved to see because it was the first bi woman I had ever had an audition for.”
Hannah has spoken openly about ADD and ADHD
She has said previously that her mind is “so scattered” and that she’s constantly analysing what she says in real-time. The intense focus required for acting has reportedly helped her manage the symptoms, at least temporarily.
Her family has a cute nickname for her
Surrounded by a family of jokers, Hannah claims that making each other laugh was a form of currency growing up. Apparently, her parents used to call her the milkmaid because if she got a laugh, she would milk the joke for all it was worth until it was no longer funny.
