In a world fraught with misconceptions and misinformation, it’s time to rewrite the narrative surrounding trans history. Enter Trans+ History Week – a groundbreaking initiative set to debunk myths, empower communities, and spark meaningful change.

From May 6–12, Trans+ History Week will mark its debut on the global calendar. Backed by 20 leading LGBTQIA organisations, this inaugural event promises a week-long dialogue, uniting diverse generations of the queer community and allies.

Ahead of Trans+ History Week, the team of highly dedicated volunteers will be hosting a Kickstarter webinar on 27 March, heralding the launch of their comprehensive guidance booklet. This resource offers invaluable insights gleaned from trans+ history, paving the way for present empowerment and future liberation.

This online event will be joined by an esteemed panel of trans+ thought leaders and change-makers, including Morgan Page, Rico Jacob Chace, Shivani Dave, Christine Burns, and Gray Burke-Stowe.

British political activist Christine Burns commented on the importance of education: “A fundamental characteristic of any community or minority that’s struggled for visibility is that it has a history. It also goes without saying that, in many cases, that history will have been mistold, obscured or simply buried by the dominant powers in society — whether by malignant design or unthinking cultural illiteracy.”

“We cannot truly be proud of the group we belong to without knowing how history brought us here. Excavating a community’s history demands we communicate it to others and that we have the means to celebrate and reflect upon it. It’s time we openly celebrated our forbears. It’s time to mark trans history with a day or a week when old stories can be told to new people and historians can be encouraged to dig up more. Seek and you shall find.”

LGBTQIA broadcaster and journalist Shivani Dave also said: “Trans+ History Week is vital to educate all of us on the vast tapestry of trans+ experiences. At a time when there is increased misrepresentation and fear-mongering about trans+ people, it’s important that not only we trans+ people know our history but that cis people do too”
