“We need to experience the shadows in order to fully appreciate the light. Life is made up of this eternal dance”

Gabi Chiummo, Senior Specialist on the Global Regulatory Affairs team in Europe at MSD, spoke to myGwork about her devotion to allyship, bravery in the face of life-changing moments, and the value of belonging.
Gabi has found her unique path within the pharmaceutical industry, cultivating a career that has taken her from Brazil to Germany and offering opportunities for personal and professional development along the way. She serves as a Senior Specialist on the Global Regulatory Affairs team at MSD, effectively merging her expertise as a veterinarian with her role in regulatory affairs. Not only has she excelled in her technical capacity, but she has also embraced a leadership role within her workplace, guiding the DE&I (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) team and serving as the Global Communication lead for the Rainbow Alliance EBRG (Employee Resource Group).
Embracing her love for exploration and new horizons, Gabi finds joy in being a Brazilian living in Germany. A self-described bookworm, travel lover and runner, her affinity for new experiences matches her enthusiasm for her diverse career, leading to a fulfilling balance that energizes her professional and personal life. Looking back on her journey with MSD, Gabi’s highlights are deeply intertwined with the company’s transformative role in her life.
“We are building a nice story together,” she reflects. “MSD was my first intern job. They saved me from a career that didn’t suit me, showed me that veterinary science is so much more than clinical practice, [and] presented me the pharmaceutical company universe.” Her experiences have resulted in personal and professional growth, the creation of enduring connections, and an international career that has broadened her perspectives beyond imagination.

The transition from Brazil to Germany posed significant challenges, but Gabi approached these with resilience and gratitude. “Everything was a huge challenge: moving, the language, the goodbyes, and the new life,” she shares. Despite the obstacles, Gabi found a silver lining, remarking, “I now have two homes. I have Brazil, my forever home, and lucky me, I also have Germany, which has given me so much more than I could have ever imagined.”
Gabi also spoke of the immense challenge in communication, particularly as everything was initially conducted in German. Despite feeling out of place, Gabi saw this as an opportunity to effect change. With the support of her site manager, team lead, and enthusiastic colleagues, Gabi and her team of 20 dedicated individuals are all united in their mission to cultivate a workplace where everyone has equal opportunities.
For Gabi, DEI is deeply important due to its ability to unite diverse perspectives, experiences, and ideas, facilitating innovative solutions and fostering creativity throughout various fields. As an ally to the LGBTQIA commitment, Gabi is determined to create an environment where everyone feels free to be their authentic selves, reflecting her belief that diversity is just the beginning, equity is the way forward, and inclusion is the ultimate destination.
“Allyship manifests in various ways and in various circumstances,” she explains. “We can all do more to support one another, to ensure that everyone feels safe and supported enough to bring their whole selves with them everywhere they go. More insights and ideas are generated in a culture of belonging.”
Gabi also shares her remarkable journey of confronting a brain tumour, which she has endearingly named Rosangela. By naming her tumour, she was able to humanize this life-changing experience, and she found empowerment and resilience. In her own words, “Of course, there are difficult days, they need to exist. We need to experience the shadows in order to fully appreciate the light, and life is made up of this eternal dance. However, I feel lit up, awakened, inspired and full of life.”
Within MSD, Gabi’s journey has become an emblem of the company’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. She highlights the company’s proactive approach to fostering an environment where employees feel a sense of belonging. Through educational initiatives, MSD ensures that diversity and inclusion are at the forefront, creating a workplace where everyone’s unique narrative is acknowledged and embraced. Gabi’s own story, shared through MSD’s platform, has resonated globally, reinforcing the company’s dedication to supporting its employees through adversity and triumph.
Reflecting on the unwavering support she’s received, Gabi speaks of the profound impact of genuine kindness, stating, “From professional to personal, I received so much support and kindness that I feel ready to face whatever life brings next, I know I have the best with me.”
Looking forward, Gabi is hopeful for life’s simple and extraordinary moments, emphasizing the importance of cherishing the present. Her message is one of profound connection and understanding, encouraging individuals to seek out and share their unique narratives, for it is in these exchanges that true empathy and community flourish.
Gabi’s story is a testament to resilience, empathy, and the power of inclusivity. Her journey and advocacy serve as a beacon of hope and understanding, inspiring others to share their stories, seek out diversity, and foster an environment where everyone feels they truly belong.
