Zoe Lister-Jones, who has recently starred in her new TV show Slip, came out at the Spirit Awards on Sunday (25 February) during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. The star said: “I’m here, I’m queer, I have some fear but I’m working through it.”
This announcement followed a conversation about the Spirit Awards’ gender-neutral categories. Zoe revealed that she was dating director Sammi Cohen, and stated that she was “so grateful” for the Awards show for being “pioneers” in making their categories genderless.
“I’m dating a nonbinary person,” she continued. “I’m friends with so many nonbinary people. And I think that without really shifting the paradigm in a larger way, it’s closing a lot of doors for really important voices.”
Sammi Cohen is known for directing hit comedies like You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023) and LGBTQIA fan-favourite Crush (2022). The queer film follows high-schooler Paige (Rowan Blanchard) who is forced to join the track team. Using this as an opportunity to get closer to her crush, Paige learns soon that true love may come in the most unexpected places.
When asked more about her relationship with Sammi, Zoe replied: “They’re an amazing filmmaker in their own right.”
Last year, Zoe posted a cheeky snap to Instagram with the caption: “queer ultimatum #happypride”
