2024 is already proving to be a year of queer joy. Matildas star Ellie Carpenter and Dutch midfielder Daniëlle van de Donk announced their engagement in an adorable Instagram post yesterday (1 Jan).

Accompanying the picture of their smiling faces and one very shiny ring, Daniëlle captioned the picture: “My person for life.”

Both football stars play for French D1 Féminine club Lyon which is where the power couple met. Daniëlle transferred from Arsenal to Lyon in 2021, and the pair are believed to have started dating a year after.

Football icons were quick to congratulate the pair, including fellow Matildas star Sam Kerr who also recently announced her engagement to Kristie Mewis. Alanna Kennedy, another one of Ellie’s teammates, wrote “Congrats lovers”. Fellow Lyon player Vanessa Giles showed her excitement by commenting “FINALLY!”

Daniëlle and Ellie began posting adorable snaps together in June 2022 after their holiday to Saint Tropez. Football fanatics soon became obsessed with the pair, and have been cheering them on ever since. We cannot wait to see the wedding pictures!

The Australian women’s team waved the LGBTQIA flag high at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023, with nine out LGBTQIA players taking to the pitch. The team made it to the semi-finals on their home pitch before being beaten by the Lionesses.
