The trial of two teenagers – an unnamed boy and girl – has come to a close after the jury at Manchester Crown Court found them both guilty of the murder of Brianna Ghey. In February this year, 16-year-old Brianna was found with fatal stab wounds in Linear Park, Warrington.
Throughout the trial, the jury heard several pieces of disturbing evidence found in the homes and phones of both teenagers, including notes which detailed their plan to murder Brianna. During the trial, both defendants blamed each other for the horrific murder.
In a breaking report by the BBC, the two teenagers were said to have apparently shown no emotion during the verdict. They were both given life sentences.
Brianna’s mother Esther Ghey has launched the Peace In Mind charity campaign in memory of her daughter to ensure that schools in Warrington are equipped with the training they need to support students who may be struggling with mental health problems and equip them with coping mechanisms.
A spokesperson from Manchester Pride said: “As we hear the outcome of today’s verdict in the tragic murder of Brianna Ghey, a brave young trans woman from Cheshire, our hearts go out to Brianna’s family and friends during this incredibly sad time. Brianna was just 16 years old and deserved a future where trans individuals live securely, and with respect. But instead, her life was devastatingly cut short.”
“No amount of legal accountability can ever make up for the profound loss to Brianna’s family, friends and the LGBTQIA community, and shocking crimes such as these show how much more needs to be done to protect the trans community, enabling them to live free of fear. Today serves as a sombre reminder to safeguard trans lives, our beautiful community should never be harmed or doubted but protected and loved.”
The names of the two teenagers have been anonymised for legal protection.
