Singer Billie Eilish has criticised a recent interview at the Variety Hitmakers event on 2 December for their line of questioning about her sexuality. The What Was I Made For star wrote in an Instagram caption that she wished reporters would stop asking her about her sexuality.

In said interview, the reporter asked Billie whether she had meant to come out earlier this year when she said in an interview with Variety magazine that she was “attracted” to women. The star responded: “No I didn’t, but I kind of thought: ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ I didn’t realise people didn’t know.”

The reporter replied saying “We need to get to a point where you don’t even have to come out”. At the time Billie laughed it off by saying, “I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, why can’t we just exist? I’ve been doing this for a long time and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”

However, after the event, the singer took to Instagram to express her disappointment with the questions about her sexuality.

“Thanks Variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters i like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares stream “what was i made for,” Billie wrote in a caption.

No one should ever feel forced into coming out. Think back to Heartstopper’s Kit Connor who was made to come out in order to stop people accusing him of “queerbaiting”.

Billie’s comment section was quickly filled with nothing but praise for the 21-year-old star, with fans quickly jumping to her defence. “Love you, Billie,” one fan wrote. “I agree with you 100%. I’m queer but we shouldn’t have to announce it on blast to validate ourselves. We should just be. Thanks for speaking about that.”
