“When I came out, pretty much all anyone talked about was the death of my career. There are now lesbians in every walk of life who are out and proud and living their lives, and it’s thrilling.”

Being a role model

“I want to be there for them, because I didn’t have anybody. I didn’t have anybody that I could look to. I had no role models, I had nobody who was doing their thing, getting on with their life. If I can do that, honestly, just for one person, that is the reason to do it.”

Making positive change

“I believe we have to all be activists, and every single one of us can do something. You don’t have to have a public profile – you just have to be willing to go put leaflets through a door or stuff envelopes. We just have to keep doing it.”
