Itβs the queermas miracle weβve all been waiting for
BY SOPHIE GRIFFITHS
As the wise Mariah Carey once said, βI donβt care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree.β All I really care about this year is watching Happiest Season at least once a week during the festive period. Us LGBTQI folk have never had a Christmas film we could relate to before, itβs only fair right?
Directed and co-written by queer icon Clea DuVall, this brand-new lesbian rom-com stars Kristen Stewart and Mackenzie Davis as Abby and Harper and the gloriously festive trailer is out now.
We meet the couple as they prepare for Abby to meet Harper’s parents for the first time at their big annual Christmas get together.Β
That’s enough pressure in itself, but Abby also plans to propose to her girlfriend during the occasion. The only problem is that Harper’s family doesn’t even know that she is gay, leading Abby to begin to question the girlfriend she thought she knew so well.
If that wasnβt enough queer icons in one film ready to make the yuletide gay, thereβs also appearances from Alison Brie, Aubrey Plaza and Dan Levy playing K Stewβs BFF.
It even features a soundtrack of just LGBTQI musicians which is certainly going to jingle our bells. Yes, that is Tegan and Sara you can hear in the trailer!
“I think I’ve wished to see a gay Christmas rom com my whole life,” Stewart previously explained to PEOPLE.
“I’m so happy and proud of [writer/director] Clea [DuVall] for bringing this into the world. I love when holiday movie makes you long for an idea of home, but also examines how hilarious and hard reality at home can be sometimes,” she added.
Happiest Season is released on Hulu on November 25. It will be available to rent or buy in the UK the following day.
