It’s no secret that cruising has been experiencing something of a renaissance in recent years. What was once considered as the preserve of the older generation is now becoming increasingly popular among people of all ages and looking for something different from their holidays.
And it’s not just the diversity in age groups which surprised me – it was quite clear that the LGBTQI community was well-represented among my fellow guests and everyone was made to feel welcome from the excellent crew.
So, with more and more people from different backgrounds choosing to spend their holidays at sea, many cruise lines have responded by upgrading their fleets – and none more so than Celebrity Cruises.
I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch of their latest ocean-going behemoth, the quite awe-inspiring Celebrity Edge. The Edge is more than just a ship; it can be best described as a floating luxury holiday resort.
My stateroom, like 90% of the Edge’s cabins, had a balcony…but not just any balcony. At the touch of a button it extends by a further 20%, fusing the Kelly Hoppen designed interior with the exterior like no other vessel I have ever seen.
Outside my cabin, the ship’s 29 bars and restaurants, located in and around the Grand Plaza vied for my attention, and with renowned Michelin star chef Cornelius Gallagher lending his name to some of the finest dining I have ever experienced, you can expect a daily feast for the taste buds.
Reaching heights of 13 storeys above sea level, the extraordinary Magic Carpet is the highlight of Celebrity Edge’s starboard side.
This spectacular space opens to several decks of the ship, transforming to a new venue depending on where it is positioned – experience incredible sky-high views on Deck 16, a new way to embark and disembark the ship on Deck 2, and exciting extensions to our restaurants and bars in between.
There are four theatres on board delivering productions of Broadway quality, and if you’re travelling with children there are around 500 activities for the little treasures to enjoy and the shopping’s pretty good too, with top luxury names like Tiffany and Cartier tempting you with their stunning on board stores.
In my view, no holiday is complete without a healthy portion of self-care, and I was blown away by the Edge’s spa and – wait for it – the 124 treatments on offer.
Of course, cruising isn’t only about the ship itself, although I could quite happily spend a week or two on board without ever disembarking. Your itinerary is pretty important too, and the good people of Celebrity Cruises have put together some of the most alluring packages I’ve ever seen.
