SUMMARY:The Sparkle Weekend
DESCRIPTION:The Sparkle Weekend is the world’s largest free-to-attend celebration of gender diversity\, and a safe space for anyone who identifies as gender non-conforming\, their families\, friends\, and allies. In 2019\, we welcomed more than 22\,000 visitors over the weekend. \nThe Sparkle Weekend is a festival-style family event\, featuring live music and entertainment\, talks and workshops\, and an opportunity for our corporate sponsors\, grassroots charities\, and trans-run businesses to engage with our visitors. \nWe also work with local and national charities who support young trans and gender questioning people and their families so that all age groups feel included. \nOne of the charity’s core values is that the event remains free-to-attend in order to be accessible to everyone\, regardless of gender identity\, race\, religion\, or physical ability. \nThe Sparkle Weekend currently costs tens-of-thousands of pounds to deliver and is currently funded by companies who share the charity’s values of equality and inclusion for all gender non-conforming individuals\, and visitor donations. Sponsorship and donations mean that the Charity can also include smaller grassroots groups who support sub-sectional minorities in the event.

DESCRIPTION:Join Megan Elliott (she/her)\, founder of Clay Wild\, for a relaxing queer pottery workshop at The Queery! The class will be focusing on traditional hand-building techniques using minimal tools and is suitable for all levels. \nParticipants will learn how to make a pinch pot and a coil pot out of air-drying clay and will be guided through how to personalise their new creations. \nAt the end of the class\, participants should have two small finished pots to take away with them and tips on how to decorate these at home when dry. These pots are perfect as little storage vessels or ornaments and can also be used for succulents/small plants. \nNo experience necessary – suitable for all levels! This is a class prioritising queer joy and creativity in a safe\, sober space. \nYour clay will still be delicate upon completion\, so please bring a little box or container to carry your creations home. DESCRIPTION:We will meet at Altab Ali Park\, across the road from the Whitechapel Gallery and make our way over to the exhibition after introductions! We can look around the gallery at our own pace as a group\, in splinter groups or as individuals and meet back at the park when each of us are ready. If the weather is lovely\, we could have a picnic and craft in the park\, otherwise we will meet in a cafe to talk about the exhibition\, life\, our current craft projects\, what our summer is treating us to\, what’s good on Netflix etc etc etc \nSo bring your sarni’s\, snacks\, blankets and portable projects – sewing\, embroidery\, crochet\, knitting\, something you wanna mend\, whatever is your current thing! I will bring some scissors to leave in the cloakroom at the gallery so they don’t get confiscated and something to keep any offcuts or loose threads in\, safe from the wind and dispose of correctly after the crafty picnic! \nThis informal social is open to all LGBTQA+ who enjoy crafting and art in all its many forms!
