The Origin of the Dinosaur Game
The Dinosaur Game was created by Google’s Chrome UX team in 2014 as a playful way to entertain users when they lost their internet connection. When the “No Internet” message appears in Chrome, a small pixelated T-Rex appears on the screen. Most people don’t realize at first that pressing the space bar starts a game — a clever surprise hidden in plain sight.
According to the developers, the idea behind the game was inspired by the prehistoric times before Wi-Fi — an era when humans had no internet, just like the lonely dinosaur before the digital age.
Simple Gameplay, Endless Fun
The gameplay of the Chrome Dinosaur Game is incredibly simple yet surprisingly addictive. Once the player presses the space bar or taps the screen (on mobile), the dinosaur starts running across a desert landscape. The goal is to survive as long as possible by jumping over cacti and ducking under flying pterodactyls.
There is no finish line — the game continues endlessly until you hit an obstacle. As the score increases, the speed also rises, making it more and more challenging. Eventually, the background switches to night mode, complete with stars and a moon, signaling your progress.
It’s the perfect example of “easy to play, hard to master.”
