Sapphics, please remain calm. Netflix has just confirmed that Bridgerton season five will be focused on the love story between Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and her late husband’s cousin, Michaela (Masali Baduza). No, this is not a drill.
In the teaser trailer for the season, audiences can see Francesca and Michaela stand side-by-side before tentatively touching fingers. We are so here for this sapphic yearning.
While we don’t know too much about season five yet, the description for the series reads: “The fifth season of Bridgerton spotlights introverted middle daughter Francesca. Two years after losing her beloved husband, John, Fran decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons. But when John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Fran’s complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions.”
Bridgerton showrunner Jess Brownell told Tudum that season five will be defined by the “big-time yearning” between Francesca and Michaela. Masali also added that she’s excited for audiences to see “Michaela yearn for Francesca”.
“She’s used to having all these walls up. I’m excited to tear down those walls and have her let Francesca in. I’m excited for people to see her wanted so deeply and so badly,” Masali added.
This new season will mark Bridgerton’s first same-gender central romance. While fans have long suspected sparks flying between Francesca and Michaela, this new season will celebrate their queer love as we’ve never seen before on the show.
Masali said: “What we really want to achieve is giving a realistic view of queer love onscreen and [giving them] a happily ever after. I think [this] is really important for a lot of the queer community to see onscreen, to know that it can work out, and that they deserve to also feel love.”
Netflix and Shondaland announced today that Bridgerton is back in production for season five. We’re on the edge of our seats.
