Love theatre? Then you won’t want to miss out on the brand-new comedy play Shuggy Boats. Written by Bafta-winning filmmaker Jacquie Lawrence and presented by Jackdaw Media, the queer female production company behind films like Gateways Grind and Life Of Riley.

The play boasts a cornucopia of local talent, including Dave Johns (I, Daniel Blake, Fisherman’s Friends, 23 Walks), Natalie Ann Jamieson (Emmerdale, Vera), Alicya Eyo (Bad Girls, Emmerdale) and Libby Davis (The Bill). There are still a few shows left before the final showing of Shuggy Boats, but tickets are selling fast, so don’t miss out.

The synopsis reads: “Maeve, a human dynamo who shines brighter than her fuchsia lipstick, reveals a huge secret at her birthday party in front of her television quiz-obsessed husband, cocky son, recently bereaved sister and workaholic niece.

“Her family is thrown into panic as Maeve’s actions force them to make changes they didn’t know needed changing. But when Maeve meets the enigmatic and charismatic Fingers then the lipstick really hits the fan.

“What follows is a shuggy boat ride full of chaos, comedy, confrontation and celebration as the action veers between the disparate worlds of Provvy Women, Mastermind addicts and Tynemouth Pride.”

Jacquie Lawrence says: “Shuggy Boats is infused with characters and scenarios from my early life in Newcastle. As an expat Geordie, it’s emotional to come home to tell the story I’ve always wanted to tell and see it come to life with such a stellar cast and inspired creatives.”

Shuggy Boat producer Fizz Milton says: “I’m so excited to be launching Shuggy Boats at the iconic Live Theatre. As a lesbian, being responsible for a play where queer chatacters are front and centre is a joy and a privilege. I’m incredibly proud that Jacquie and I have persevered to make this happen and seeing it brought to life by our amazing cast is beyond meaningful for us and I hope our community.”

There’s a special Shuggy Boats performance tomorrow (Saturday 14 March) at 7:30pm as part of a London Women’s Clinic and DIVA magazine event.
