Grey’s Anatomy fans rejoiced as a new sapphic romance was hard-launched last week between Amelia Shepherd and new Plastics resident Dr Toni Wright.
Amelia, played by Caterina Scorsone, is a firm favourite amongst audiences and was sorely missed during her recent sabbatical. But now the Head of Neurosurgery is back with a bang – no, literally!
In a recent episode, Amelia recognises new resident Dr Toni Wright from med school. When they were students, Amelia always felt like Toni hated her. After plucking up the courage, Amelia finally asks Toni what her deal is. The answer? She has a crush on her. The pair immediately take off to an on-call room and process years of sexual tension. Yep, it’s super hot.
This pairing marks Amelia’s first proper romance since season 19, where she fell in love with Dr Kai, played by the iconic E.R. Fightmaster.
Speaking to Shondaland about this new storyline, Caterina said: “Amelia was initially written as a queer character. The first episode she was ever in, she was in a relationship with her [female] fellow, but that storyline didn’t make the cut for time. But to me, that was always part of the playing of her. And there’s been talk on Grey’s of Amelia having a crush on Carina and other crushes — there were always mentions of it. But we didn’t actually get to see her queerness on camera until the Kai relationship.”
“One of the things that’s so refreshing about our show is that we’ve always shown things are more complex than a binary. The world is always evolving, and the characters are always meeting new situations with curiosity and adventure. I think our show has handled it really beautifully. And did you know this? Amelia is officially the longest-running queer character on television.”
Dr Toni Wright is played by Jennifer Landon, who audiences might recognise from the hit show Yellowstone.
While things are looking pretty steamy for the pair now, fans are unsure whether Amelia is ready for another romance. Amelia was placed on sabbatical after the traumatic explosion which killed Monica. Speaking to Shondaland about the future of Amelia’s relationship with Toni, Caterina added: “Amelia is so gun-shy about life that she can’t picture beyond, like, next week. She’s still in this place of emotional and psychological guardedness, with complex PTSD from all of the trauma she’s been through — even just the hostage-taking, with her friends dying and being injured.”
