At just 21, Evann McIntosh already has an impressive resume. The queer and non-binary star has been carving out space in the alt-pop space and has deservedly been credited as an artistic shapeshifter. Evann’s latest singles Free Ride and Blue Movie Magic mark their much-awaited return to releasing music since their 2021 EP Character Development. These tracks represent a new chapter for the musician with more music coming soon.
DIVA: How are you feeling about releasing music again?
Evann: I’m super excited to share this new sound. Before these first two singles, my last release was about three years ago. I’m pumped to have some newer work out that’s truer to where I’m at.
Let’s talk about your new track, Free Ride. Can you walk us through the making of this song from the moment inspiration struck to preparing to release it?
Free Ride was inspired by early experiences moving to Chicago, being college-aged and the only person in a friend group with a car. I’d been listening to Madison Cunningham’s album, Revealer, a lot around then and I think some of that bled into the writing process. Abe Rounds, who produced this track, reached out to see if she’d want to play on it and she came through to lay down some sweet guitar magic. My friends and I made a killer music video for it, driving around Chicago. Now it’s out in the world for whoever to play on their personal free ride
Your music videos are so delightful. So I have to ask, where do you go to nurture your joy?
All over the place. It’s easy to fall into the clutches of the scroll. I grew up with a phone in my hand and, as I get older, I’m learning I’m at my best and happiest when my sponge brain is absorbing smart things like books, movies and music instead of garbage media all day long. I love to be around my friends and out in the world. I think outside of the isolation of my phone is where I’m nurturing my joy.
In an interview with Last Bus Magazine, you said your song BULL$HIT was inspired by your astrological compatibility to people with Taurus traits. Firstly, I’m a Taurus sun. But more importantly, do you know your sun, moon and rising signs?
Yes! I am an Aquarius sun, Libra moon, and Libra rising. Hence my major overthinking.
Who are some LGBTQIA+ artists you have on rotation at the moment?
Liza Minelli’s not gay in the way you mean, but, I think it’s fair to put that on my list. Chappell Roan, Adrienne Lenker. I was listening to Tracey Chapman’s album Let It Rain.
