The Guilty Feminist podcast has launched a new series of live events and podcast recordings tackling the rise of American “Christian Nationalism” in the UK. Titled The Road To Gilead, the series, led by Deborah Frances-White, features stand-up comedy and deep dive discussions into some of the most pressing issues we’re facing today.
Throughout these insightful conversations, Deborah and guests examine how hard-won rights are being eroded away, drawing parallels between our current political climate and Margaret Atwood’s infamous book The Handmaid’s Tale. Already, Deborah has been joined by co-hosts like Jessica Fostekew and Alison Spittle to discuss the value of coalition and the fight back for gender justice.
You can still see The Road To Gilead live, with three upcoming events promising insightful conversation. On Sunday (23 Nov), Deborah will be joined by Jane Bradley and Susan Wokoma to discuss investigating transatlantic networks. Following this, on 6 December, queer icon Russell T. Davies and Grace Petrie will be joining Deborah on stage to chat about stories, representation and resistance. The series will end with an Open Space Community Event with Amnesty International on 17 January 2026, bringing together organisers, activists and participants to share ideas about how to respond to the rise of the far-right.
Speaking about the importance of this series, Deborah said: “A Gilead-like dystopia doesn’t happen overnight. It takes a road to get there. I believe we are on that road now but we have the time and will to turn around. We just need to act.”
“But shouting at people on social media is counter-productive. We need to form coalitions and get organised. On my last tour around the country I saw there was a huge appetite for coming together and making a change with energy, connection and conviction. People feel alone and helpless sometimes. This is a call to collaboration and positive, collective action. The space will continue to be a warm, welcoming, funny, joyful one because that draws people together. There’ll be jokes and sometimes songs – and there’ll be camaraderie and action.”
All events in this new series will be recorded live and released as episodes on The Guilty Feminist podcast feed.
