In 2006 Elizabeth Gilbert published a memoir, Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search For Everything, that became a cultural phenomenon. The must-read book chronicled the writer’s quest for sensual, spiritual and romantic fulfilment. It was a profoundly appealing journey that encompassed indulging in pasta in Italy, praying at an ashram in India, and falling hopelessly in love in Bali.
Eat, Pray, Love was Elizabeth’s fourth book and since then, she has written many more spanning multiple genres. Now, almost 20 years after Eat, Pray, Love captivated readers worldwide, Elizabeth is back with a new memoir, All The Way To The River, that’s got everybody talking once more. It is perhaps the most revealing, riveting thing she’s ever written.
This is what Elizabeth had to say on…
What it was like once she and her best friend Rayya were finally romantically involved: “I’m a writer and I have no words.”
Looking back on the response to Eat, Pray, Love: “It was wild and it stayed wild for such a long time. It very quickly became evident to me that that book had its own agenda.”
Choosing to be childfree: “No. I never did regret it. As the years go by, I’m like, thank you for this incarnation where I get to live in a moment of history where I actually had the agency to make that decision about my body.”
