Australian superstar G Flip is standing approximately one foot away from me. Fans are swarming around them, but the rockstar doesn’t seem phased at all. They’ve ventured out into the crowd at the O2 Academy Brixton, smiling ear-to-ear at the chance to celebrate their music with their fans. Looking effortlessly cool in a black tank top and shades, they manage to still give the performance of a lifetime while balancing on the barrier.

Singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and all-round icon G Flip performed at the iconic O2 Academy in Brixton on Wednesday (12 November) as part of their Dream Ride tour. The singer has had quite the year already, labelling themselves “Butch Springsteen” and releasing their new album which shot to stardom with tracks like Big Ol’ Hammer and Disco Cowgirl. Keen Selling Sunset fans will have also seen the singer loved up with their wife Chrishell Stause, discussing plans for the future.

The first rule of a G Flip concert is to not be a dickhead. The second? Celebrate the LGBTQIA+ community. From the beginning of G Flip’s set, it was evident that this show was a love letter to queer culture. Waving a rainbow flag around the stage while singing their hit track GAY 4 ME, there was a palpable sense of euphoria in the room. This was cemented when the rockstar belted out their track I Don’t Wanna Regret and fans around the room screamed the line, “You came out trans and you can finally breathe.”

Despite the fact that it was a Wednesday evening, the room was full of people dancing like it was a Saturday night. The setlist was joyous, and fans were jumping, dancing, holding hands with strangers and screaming the lyrics. G Flip and their band were also having a lot of fun on stage, whether it be saxophone solos on the floor or guitarists chasing each other around the stage. In that room, for an hour and a half, it was impossible to stop grinning the entire time.

Away from the drum solos, raucous dancing and hip-thrusting, G Flip also shone in ballads like In Another Life. It was clear by the end of the night that the love from the room was overwhelming for the star who wiped away tears while performing their last tracks. It’s precisely this humility that fans connect with most. G Flip has always remained entirely true to themselves, prioritising their fans and their music.

Full of energy, passion and incredible performances, G Flip was born to be a rockstar.
