Creators Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson took to social media to announce that season four of Yellowjackets will be the conclusion to our favourite wilderness-based drama.
“After three incredible seasons, and great consideration, we’re excited to announce that we will be bringing the story of Yellowjackets to its twisted conclusion in this fourth and final season.”
Lyle and Nickerson continued: “We’ve always known there would come a point when the story would tell us it wants to end, and it’s our belief that our job — our responsibility — is to listen. Telling this emotional, wild, and deeply human story has been a profoundly meaningful experience and a true honor for us, and we’re so very grateful to the brilliant cast, crew and writers who have bravely gone on the journey with us to bring it to life.”
“Most of all, we want to thank the fans who have stuck with us through every moment, mystery and meal — the Hive is nothing without you! We can’t wait to share the final chapter with you and hope you find it…delicious.”
Yellowjackets first hit our screens in 2021, telling the story of a high school girls’ soccer team, whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness in 1996. The show combines two timelines: the story of survival in the 1996 timeline and their lives 25 years in the future. Dealing with themes of trauma, coming of age, and psychological horror, Yellowjackets has cemented itself as a cultural titan, with the series garnering 10 Emmy nominations, including ones for Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series.
Season three saw a continuation of beloved characters Taissa and Van’s relationship, and it is hoped that season four will feature more of them in the 1996 timeline, after the shock ending to their story in the modern timeline.
Many sapphic Yellowjackets fans also had their theories validated when season three confirmed main character Shauna to be bisexual through her storyline with Melissa in the 1996 timeline. Season four will hopefully offer more room for this to be explored, as well as Shauna’s emotionally charged friendship with Jackie, which remains a central thread throughout the show despite the latter’s death at the end of season one.
Last season saw the beginnings of a divide between the adult versions of the characters, with Taissa and Misty uniting against Shauna following Van’s death and the reveal that Melissa also survived the wilderness.
The 1996 timeline in season four will likely focus on the girls’ reintegration into society after rescue, after we saw Natalie make contact with the outside world at the end of season three.
Production of the fourth season is set to begin in 2026, with no confirmed release date.
