The A Word by Jade Winters is returning for a new London run

Best-selling WLW author, Jade Winters, is bringing her play, The A Word, to three stages across London this year.

The A Word, originally staged in 2023 and now re-imagined, puts centre stage a hidden story of emotional abuse in a lesbian relationship. A tale of when love turns controlling. The audience will be drawn into the quiet reality of coercive control behind closed doors, in this upsetting and intimate drama on stage.

Winters tells the story of Brooke, battling an abusive relationship, but one that remains so silent, not even her closest friends know she is suffering through. The playwright said: “When The A Word was first staged, I knew it had something important to say…this new version pulls you closer to Brooke’s life – close enough to recognise the signs in your ownworld, or in a friend’s, and to see just how far someone can fall without you realising.”

This powerfully reflective play offers a rare glimpse into the dangerous realities of controlling partners, and of abuse so often left untold, unseen and unheard.

Winters, nominated twice at our DIVA Awards for Author of the Year, has published several novels and short stories in the lesbian fiction genre. She has been praised for her honest and relatable stories focused on women’s lives and brings no less to this important story on stage.

Catch The A Word opening at the Golden Goose Theatre on 23 August. The play will then move to the Drayton Arms Theatre on both 14 and 15 September, and finally at the Bread & Roses Theatre on 9 and 10 November.
