Are you wondering how to celebrate Butch Appreciation Day? Well, if you’re feeling more lowkey or looking for a way to unwind, here’s a list of some butch-inclusive media to dig your teeth into.

Cloudburst

Cloudburst is a 2011 Canadian-American comedy-drama film written and directed by Thom Fitzgerald. This film seesStella and Dotty, an older lesbian couple, set off on a road trip to get married in Nova Scotia. On the way, they pick up a hitchhiker, Prentice, who is travelling home to visit his dying mother.

Sort Of

This HBO Max show, created by Bilal Baig and Fab Filippo, follows a genderqueer millennial whose parents immigrated from Pakistan. Their best friend is a non-binary trans masculine person, and the show uses intersectional representation to explore the evolving nature of labels in modern society.

Riot Acts

Released in 2010 and directed by Tami Gold, this “transfabulous rockumentary” puts the spotlight on trans and gender-nonconforming musicians, including butch-identifying artists. It interrogates the crossover between gender and stage performance and amplifies the voice of queer artists existing outside of social norms.

Butch Mystique

This 2003 community documentary highlights exclusively Black butch lesbians in the Bay Area. Butches of all age groups share various aspects of their lifestyle and how being butch informs their day-to-day lives.

Work In Progress

This comedy-drama follows Abby, a self-identified “fat queer dyke”, through two deliciously chaotic seasons. Abby is going through a rough patch when she enters into a transformative relationship with a younger trans man.

And for all the sports lovers out there, check out Jockular! Self-described as “three gay jocks with a podcast”, be a fly on the wall as this queer friend group discuss all things gay, trans and women-forward in the world of sports. It’s available on all major podcast platforms, so you have 0 excuses to not tune in.
