Europe’s summer of football has come to a close with a roaring success for the Lionesses. Last night’s final (27 July) finished with a nail-biting penalty shootout between England and Spain, ultimately culminating in England’s win.
This is, of course, not the first time that the Lionesses have been European champions. Leah Williamson also led the team to victory at the 2022 Euros.
Alongside the incredible football performances we’ve seen on the pitch, the Lionesses have been providing LGBTQIA+ visibility across the tournament. LGBTQIA+ England players like Beth Mead and Lauren Hemp were quick to show their excitement on social media after the win.
Lauren wrote “Not another one”, while Beth commented “European champions again”.
LGBTQIA+ player Jess Carter was a pivotal part of the win on Sunday. The player stepped away from social media during the tournament due to racist abuse she was receiving online. Afterwards, the England squad opted not to take the knee before the game, calling for more to be done to protect players from racism off the pitch.
The final saw a sold-out stadium, and this year’s Women’s Euros has seen record attendance, with over 600,000 people watching in Switzerland and millions around the world. On Tuesday (29 July), the Lionesses will have an open-top bus parade through London to celebrate the win.
