How many of these do you agree with?

Have you ever watched a character’s entire arc and in the end thought to yourself: How are they not gay? Well, guess what? We all did and here are some characters that we thought should have been queer, but the script did not give them the opportunity to be.

Regina George (Mean Girls)

It’s no secret that the theory that Regina might be a lesbian has been going around for years. Even actor Reneé Rapp, who portrayed Regina in both the Broadway adaptation and the 2024 musical remake of the movie, went on Instagram and posted slides with the caption ‘‘Regina George was a lesbian’’. Many fans agree with Rapp, even thinking she had a crush on her frenemy Cady and had a strong homoromantic friendship with Janis in the past.

Jackie Taylor (Yellowjackets)

The discussion that Jackie Taylor might be a lesbian has been going around the fandom since season one of Yellowjackets premiered. Fans have been pointing out the evidence on many social media platforms, whether it’s the coldness she feels towards her on-and-off boyfriend Jeff, or her indescribably strong relationship with her best friend Shauna.

Quinn Fabray (Glee)

Glee is known to be a show with many openly queer characters, and many fans suggest that Quinn was also sapphic like her fellow Cheerios teammates Santana and Brittany. Many people pointed out her disinterest in getting physical with her boyfriends, or her complicated relationship with Rachel. It wasn’t until season four, episode 14 titled I Do in which Quinn hooks up with the openly lesbian character Santana that the majority of the fanbase thought the character might be queer.

Elphaba Thropp and Galinda Upland (Wicked)

The fans have been pointing out the undeniable chemistry between the two characters since Wicked had its Broadway debut in 2003. Even though the two women are canonically not together, the author of the novel Gregory Maguire, which the play and the film were based on,  revealed that the sexual chemistry between Elphaba and Glinda was written on purpose. Fans have even come up with a ship name – “Gelphie” – when referring to the couple.

Beca Mitchell and Chloe Beale (Pitch Perfect)

“So, there’s like 10 of us. That means one of us is probably a lesbian.” The quote said by queer actor Rebel Wilson in the first movie of the franchise might have predicted the online discourse surrounding “Bechloe”. Perhaps the fans have noticed the chemistry between the two during the scene where Chloe discovers that Becca has a beautiful voice while they are both in the dormitory showers and of course the development of their relationship throughout the course of the film series.

Annie Edison (Community)

Some might describe Annie Edison as a textbook victim of Compulsory Heterosexuality (comphet), and some might say she is a “friend of Ellen”. Whether it’s her envious, yet admiring nature towards Britta, or her passing fantasy crushes on unavailable men such as Jeff and Troy, the fans of the TV show have speculated Annie might be queer. It is possible that the first speculations started when episode 15 of season two titled “Early 21st Century Romanticism” aired in which Annie leans in to kiss Britta with enthusiasm when a voice off camera encourages her to do so.
