The lead-up to the Women’s Euros 2025 has been a chaotic time for the Lionesses team. Legendary goalkeeper Mary Earps stunned supporters when she announced that she was retiring from international duty, with immediate effect, ahead of the European Championship. Midfielder Fran Kirby – one of the squad’s openly lesbian players – followed suit a week later. Defender and Women’s World Cup captain Millie Bright revealed she has withdrawn from selection due to personal reasons.
Suffice to say, Lioness fans have been concerned over the squad’s fate in the upcoming Euros. Today at 2pm BST, the team’s manager Sarina Wiegman named the new squad members for this year’s competition.
Our 2025 goalkeepers are Hannah Hampton, Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse. Our defenders are: Lucy Bronze, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles, Maya Le Tissier, Esme Morgan, Alex Greenwood and Leah Williamson. Here’s the chosen midfielders: Grace Clinton, Jess Park, Ella Toone, Georgia Stanway and Keira Walsh. And last, but not least, our forwards: Lauren Hemp, Beth Mead, Lauren James, Chloe Kelly, Aggie Beever-Jones, Michelle Agyemang, Alessia Russo.
At the last Euros, there were seven out and proud members of the Lionesses. That number has now more than halved. But it’s still great to see that there’ll be some LGBTQIA+ visibility on this pitch this time around, and we’ll be cheering our Lionesses on!
And now, who’s publicly out as LGBTQIA+ and who are they dating?
Jess Carter
It’s great to see DIVA-favourite Jess Carter is still on the team. The Chelsea player began dating her teammate Ann-Katrin Berger in 2017, which made them a certified sapphic power couple in the sporting world. Football fans were hooked when they saw the couple play against each other at the 2022 Euros. They announced their en-gay-gement back in 2024.
Lauren Hemp
This Norfolk-born forward player is another openly LGBTQIA+ Lioness. She is credited by many fans as being one of the key players when it comes to the potential to defend the Lionesses’ Euros title.
She was previously dated fellow footballers Ellie Butler and Ashley Hodson, however, her current relationship status isn’t confirmed.
Beth Mead
This Lioness holds the record for the all-time most assists and second-most goal contributions in the Women’s Super League. Back during the 2022 Euros, she succeeded in the race for the Golden Boot by scoring six goals and facilitating five assists.
The openly gay player has been in a relationship with Arsenal star Vivianne Miedema since 2022. The couple frequently post adorable pictures together on social media proudly displaying queer love.
