The latest promo clip for Wicked: For Good reveals each character’s new look and has ignited excitement ahead of the official trailer, expected to be released today (4 June).
Not only is each character adorned in an exquisite outfit, but the casting choices are a celebration of diversity, featuring a lineup of openly LGBTQIA+ actors who will, no doubt, bring authenticity and heart to this beloved story.
Leading the cast is Cynthia Erivo, who returns as Elphaba. Erivo, who came out as queer in 2021, brings depth to the character, drawing a link between Elphaba’s outsider status and her own experiences as a Black, queer woman. In a heartfelt speech at the LGBT Center Gala just last year, she said: “As I stand here in front of you: Black, bald-headed, pierced and queer, I can say I know a thing or two about being the other.”
Marissa Bode, playing Nessarose, not only brings her queer identity to the role but also marks a milestone as the first disabled actress to play the character.
Joining her is Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero. Openly gay since his public coming out in 2018, Bailey has since been a vocal advocate for LGBTQIA+ representation in the arts, joining shows like Heartstopper. His portrayal of Fiyero adds a layer of authenticity to the character’s journey of finding his true self.
Taking on the role of Madame Morrible is Michelle Yeoh. While not identifying as LGBTQIA+ herself, she has been labelled a gay icon by the community, something which she calls a “badge of honour”.
Last but not least is Ariana Grande, who is similarly adored by the LGBTQIA+ community, told GLAAD: “Oz is a very queer place.” Director Jon M. Chu’s adaptation does not shy away from its queer roots, which is shown in these casting choices.
Wicked: For Good premieres on 21 November 2025, promising a magical experience that celebrates diversity and the power of being true to oneself.
