The Last Of Us (TLOU) co-creator Craig Mazin has teased that a season four might be on the cards for the hit HBO show, stating that there’s ā€œno way to completeā€ the story in just three series.

In an interview with Collider, Mazin spoke about fitting so much source material from the beloved game into a television format. Already teasing that series three – which has been confirmed – will likely be longer than the current second series, it’s clear that there’s a lot more in TLOU world left to unpack.Ā

Speaking about adapting the game, Mazin said: ā€œThe challenge for our first season was, how do we tell this big story in a way that’s complete and doable within an amount of time and with the budget we have? And with this season, it was, ā€˜Okay, this source material goes way beyond one season.ā€™ā€

The second series of TLOU has had sapphic fans in a frenzy thanks to the blossoming relationship between Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and Dina (Isabela Merced). Faithful to the groundbreaking game, the series has delighted LGBTQIA viewers with a slow-burn romance between the pair.

Speaking about the romance, Mazin said: ā€œThe one [storyline] that I was both nervous and excited about was the way we laid out the development of Ellie and Dina’s relationship. In the game, they get together physically before Joel dies, and Dina is not present there. It’s Tommy who’s present when Joel dies. I thought people were going to be pretty angry at me. I thought Ellie-Dina stans would be like, ā€˜What is this tent scene where they’re not kissing and they’re not together?ā€™ā€Ā

Fans have been quick to celebrate the visibility of sapphic relationships in the show. Speaking to DIVA, Isabela Merced spoke about the importance of Ellie and Dina’s storyline. ā€œFor me, what I took from this series, as a queer audience member, was that devotion that they have for one another. It’s something that we all can learn from. I do see this as a successful sapphic story only because I just haven’t seen one that’s touched me so deeply in a way.ā€
