As summer approaches and daydreams of sunny beaches and poolside cocktails take over, we have got you covered with everything you need to plan the perfect getaway! To help make the most of your adventure, here are some travel tips just for you.

Do Your Research

Before booking your trip, it is essential to research the legal and social climate for LGBTQIA travellers in your chosen destination. Laws protecting LGBTQIA rights vary across the globe, so staying informed will help you avoid any uncomfortable or dangerous situations. Also, take the time to learn about the social attitudes and customs to help you gauge an idea of how LGBTQIA individuals are perceived and treated in your desired destination.

If you are relying on influencers or travel blogs for guidance, remember that no single experience can speak for an entire community, and everyone’s outlook on the world will be different. Seek out multiple perspectives to gain a well-rounded view of what to expect.

Ensure that your travel insurance covers LGBTQIA-specific concerns such as medical emergencies or legal support.

Plan With Pride

Before stepping on a plane, train, or cruise, take the time to craft an itinerary that includes LGBTQIA-friendly accommodations, inclusive neighbourhoods, and queer spaces. Whether you are after a vibrant nightlife or meaningful cultural interactions, knowing where to go makes for a stress-free holiday.

For example, if you are looking to have a fantastic time in Barcelona you will find plenty of queer spots to enjoy! Check out La Raposa in Poble Sec which is an inclusive, feminist bookshop and vegan café co-op. Meanwhile, in Sydney, Oxford Street offers the perfect atmospheric blend of local charm and international appeal. Lined with shops, bars, and clubs, it is the heart of the city’s LGBTQIA scene and a must-visit for queer travel enthusiasts.

Booked And Ready

A great way to prepare for your upcoming trip is by diving into travel books specifically created for the LGBTQIA community. A fresh and recent release is Lonely Plant the LGBTQ+ Travel Guide by Alicia Valenski. This comprehensive guide is packed with up-to-date recommendations across Europe, South America, South Africa, Asia, Canada, and the Pacific.

Written by a queer, neurodivergent travel writer, the book offers an inclusive and insightful look at over 50 destinations around the world, from the artsy alleyways of Melbourne to the vibrant seaside of Brighton. Beyond itinerary ideas, the book features personal stories, interviews with LGBTQIA locals, and insider tips on where to go and what to see.

Find Your Ideal Destination With Inclusive Travel Sites

When booking your trip, using LGBTQIA-inclusive travel websites can help you find destinations and experiences that match you. One useful website is The International LGBTQ+ Travel Association (IGLTA) which is a global network of tourism businesses that actively welcome LGBTQIA travellers. IGLTA provides a wide range of travel resources and information including accommodation, transport, destinations, service providers, travel advisors, tour operators, events, and travel media in over 80 countries.

Consult A Travel Influencer

Social media is a powerful tool to utilise when planning your next getaway. LGBTQIA travel influencers can offer firsthand insights you will not find on other platforms on the internet. One standout is @thelesbianpassport, a solo lesbian traveller who has a large presence on both Instagram and TikTok. Her content promotes her experiences visiting a variety of cities and countries. On Instagram she organises her travels by country, offering accessible links to recommended accommodations, restaurants, and experiences. You will also find posts like “LGBTQ+ friendly countries”, “Queer Spots Around the World”, and “Pack with me”. Her platform is colourful, informative, and easy to navigate – clear evidence that travel can be both joyful and safe for everyone.

And of course, don’t forget to pack a queer romance!

DIVA magazine celebrates 31 years in print in 2025. If you like what we do, then get behind LGBTQIA media and keep us going for another generation. Your support is invaluable.
