One may wonder why the need to make Wedding Banquet’s millennial version happen. The revival of Ang Lee’s 1993 cult classic, directed by Andrew Ahn has just had its UK release, after its success at the Sundance Film Festival.
The narrative sees Min (Han Gi-Chan), a gay man who marries one of his lesbian friends, Angela (Kelly Marie Train), to get his green card. In exchange, the aspiring artist and heir to a massive South Korean business empire offers to pay for Angela and her girlfriend’s IVF treatments.
Here are some of the actors that you might have seen before.
Bowen Yang (Chris)
A staple for the queer community, Bowen Yang has accepted his queerness after being raised in a conservative Chinese family and is now a pinnacle in his comedy shows. His most notable work is on Saturday Night Live, earning him an Emmy nomination, but he also starred in Wicked, Fire Island and Dicks: The Musical.
Lily Gladstone (Lee)
Lily Gladstone captivated the audience in Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon, where their performance delivered an emotional, heartbreaking truth about the murders of the Osage family, set in the 1920s. The Indigenous actor is also known for their role in Certain Women and Fancy Dance.
Kelly Marie Train (Angela)
The actor, who is known for her roles in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Raya And The Last Dragon, made history as the first Asian American woman to lead a Star Wars movie. Alongside her acting career, she also advocates for better representation in Hollywood.
Han Gi-Chan (Min)
Han made waves in Korea’s first Boys’ Love drama, Where Your Eyes Linger, as he delivered a versatile, complex performance as 18-year-old successor to TB Group, Han Tae Joo.
Youn Yuh-jung (Ja-Young)
The Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress plays Min’s conservative grandma, who wants to visit the “newlyweds” before giving her blessing. Youn has a distinguished career in Korean cinematography; she became an international household name after her role in Minari.
