Alice Oseman has filled fans with excitement after revealing more information about the “beautiful and emotional” new Heartstopper film. Speaking with Netflix’s Tudum, Oseman discussed their plans to replace season four with a feature film which will draw its source material from the upcoming sixth and final volume of the graphic novel series, along with the 2020 novella Nick and Charlie.

Taking off where season three ended, this new film will see a number of challenges for the tight-knit friend group. With discussions about university looming, how will relationships like Nick and Charlie’s survive?

Speaking about the new film, Oseman acknowledged that it was these more adult themes that lent themselves best for the film adaptation. “I think this movie will explore what makes love survive, or what elevates it, or deepens it,” Oseman said. “Many teenage relationships don’t survive that pivotal moment of change. Are Nick and Charlie a forever love? If they are, why? I want the movie to capture this transitional moment for them as a couple — from teens to adults, from teen romance to forever love, from past to future.”

Heartstopper became an LGBTQIA staple show after its release in 2022. Sapphic audiences in particular were drawn to characters like Tara and Darcy, providing lesbian and non-binary representation.

For this new feature film, leading stars Kit Connor (Nick) and Joe Locke (Charlie) will be acting as executive producers. Centred all around the highs and lows of teenage love in flux, it’s sure to be a tear-jerker.

Oseman said that they hope the film shows “what teenage love can mean for people in the overall picture of their lives. An exploration of time, memory, love, pain, the changing of the seasons, endings and beginnings, and the core element of Heartstopper: the ordinary magic of our everyday lives.”
