It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that Elizabeth Bennet is one of the most beloved characters in the history of romance novels. The quick-witted and sharp-tongued heroine has captivated readers again and again in the centuries since Jane Austen first created her, and is set to do so again in a new limited series, where she will be played by non-binary star, Emma Corrin.
Emma, who had their breakthrough as Princess Diana on The Crown and has just appeared in Black Mirror, will be playing Lizzie in a new six-part adaptation of Pride & Prejudice. Based on Jane Austen’s 1813 book of the same name, the series has been adapted by best-selling author Dolly Alderton and Heartstopper director Euros Lyn.
“With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters,” said Dolly. Alongside Emma, two other members of the cast have been announced, including The Favourite‘s Olivia Colman. She will play Mrs Bennet, Lizzie’s overbearing mother. This is a reunion for Olivia and Emma, as the former played Elizabeth II in the same seasons of The Crown in which Emma starred as her daughter-in-law.
Jack Lowden, famous for Slow Horses, has also been cast as Mr Darcy, Lizzie’s nemesis turned love interest.
Emma said: “Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honour.”
As well as starring in the show, Emma is one of the executive producers. The series will start production in the UK later this year.
