Bristol-based DJ, facilitator, and music producer LEXX has released their new electronic track, Soft Butch, just ahead of International Transgender Day of Visibility. The track, a tribute to butch identities and their admirers, is described as a “hymn of resistance, balm for the queer soul, and legacy to our beautiful butch and butch-appreciating communities.” The standalone release will be available on LEXX’s SoundCloud.
LEXX is known for creating Soft Butch, a club night launched in November 2022 that celebrates butchness and provides a space for women, non-binary, and trans individuals to dance freely. The event fosters an immersive, body-centred experience, incorporating optional meditation, a phone-free dance floor, and a culture of presence. With crowds reaching up to 400 attendees, Soft Butch has expanded beyond Bristol, recently selling out its debut in Birmingham and preparing for international collaborations in 2025.
Inspired by the event’s impact, LEXX sought to bring Soft Butch to life through music. The track is a collaborative effort, featuring vocal contributions from members of the butch, femme, non-binary and trans communities. With backing vocals by t l k, mixing by Biped, and mastering by Izzy McPhee, Soft Butch is a creation entirely led by women, non-binary and trans artists.
In a time of increasing discrimination against trans and queer communities, LEXX affirms the power of collective storytelling and resilience. They extend gratitude to all who contributed their voices to the track, as well as to the queer ancestors and spaces like Bristol Butch Bar that have paved the way.
Soft Butch will serve as a ritual closing anthem at future gatherings, with upcoming events on 2 May at Lost Horizon and 12 July at Trinity, coinciding with Bristol Pride.
