If you’re near Westfield London around Trans Day of Visibility (31 March), make sure you take a look at a powerful new photography exhibition, celebrating trans identities. The groundbreaking Trans Is Human project has been created and produced by actor and filmmaker Jake Graf and award-winning campaigner Hannah Graf MBE.
The landmark exhibition is shot by world-renowned photographer Mariano Vivanco, who presents an intimate portrait of the community through a series of powerful images and personal stories from trans people.
As Jake says, too often, being trans overshadows the other aspects of a person’s identity. “The truth is, gender identity is frequently the least interesting aspect of who these individuals are. This exhibition aims to shift that perspective.”
For instance, the exhibition will feature Sarah, who was diagnosed with arthritis as a child and lost her sight later. Now in her 50s, she works with LGBTQIA people with disabilities and runs marathons to support visually impaired adults.
Amanda, who got refugee status last year, has a Master’s in International Development and was the first Miss Trans Global Uganda. Leo, who lives with Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy and is a speaker, model, podcast host and life coach dedicated to elevating adults with physical disabilities. Other participants include musicians, cancer survivors, doctors and more. “Each person featured brings their unique talents, passions and contributions that enrich our society in so many ways,” adds Jake.
The exhibition will run from 27 to 31 March at Westfield London. Its celebration of those whose visibility creates safer spaces for others, from accomplished advocates to everyday heroes, is launching in partnership with Pride Wide and free to visit.
