The Muleteer is a breathtaking odyssey of identity, freedom, and survival. In 1930s Mexico, rebellious teenager Emilia escapes into the Jalisco mountains, disguising herself as a muleteer in search of her father – and herself. Sweeping landscapes, simmering romance, and untamed adventure make this a spellbinding journey of self-discovery.

DIVA speaks to the director Isabel Cristina Fregoso ahead of its screening at BFI Flare.

Was there a specific moment or reference point which inspired your film?

I recall a profound sexual awakening I experienced around the age of fourteen. Everything around me seemed spectacular and beautiful – closeness with friends or cousins, nature, wáter, it all evoked a “warm liquid” emotional feeling, a sense of inspiration. However, when I felt the need to share these feelings with others, simply to express them in words, I was met with harsh judgment, violence, or hate – a reaction I found deeply confusing.

If you had to describe your film in three words, what would they be?

Love, medicine, Mexico.

What was the most unexpected lesson you learned while making this film?

While fear can be overwhelming, it’s a battle we can face each day. I know this from personal experience. There was a time when I was consumed by fear, but I found solace and strength in love for my work doing this film. Additionally, the profound connection I developed with horses played a crucial role in my journey.

How does it feel to have your film showcased at BFI Flare?

I’m excited and honoured for the opportunity to touch these open and beautiful audiences with a story from the heart of the Jalisco Mountains.

BFI Flare is a celebration of LGBTQIA storytelling. What do you hope LGBTQIA audiences at BFI Flare take away after watching your film?

This film invites you to explore the lives of your ancestors and discover their rural stories of love and passion. It is a journey of reflection, tracing the paths that have led us to where we are today.

Why do you think LGBTQIA filmmaking is so important in 2025?

I believe it’s crucial to remain steadfast in our commitment to LGBTQIA rights. The LGBTQIA movement stands as a bulwark against homogenization and a powerful expression of individuality. Our bodies, territories, and ways of life are under constant threat, and we must continue to defend them.

What was the best piece of advice you received while working on this film, and what advice would you give to emerging queer filmmakers?

I believe that what you decide or do in your film transcends the topic itself. You are an integral part of a larger narrative, and your voice resonates with us all. Filmmaking connects us to something profound, and your crew shares this mission. We are companions on a journey to make a difference in our own lives and the lives of others.

What’s the one question you wish more people would ask about your film?

How to visit our locations. We call it “La ruta de la raicilla” and it’s a great way to experience the beauty and culture of the area.

THE MULETEER screens as part of the 39th BFI Flare: London LGBTQIA+ Film Festival on Friday 21 March and Saturday 22 March. For more details / tickets here
