This isn’t your dad’s fishing show. Get Hooked, a new documentary series heading to OUTflix in March, explores the intersection between queerness, disability and the healing power of fishing with the help of plenty of famous faces, including Rosie Jones and Faye Marsay.
The series has been created by Heidi Lynch, the showrunner of Avocado Toast, and Leah Vlemmiks. It is set to premiere on 17 March. Set against the backdrop of Ontario, each episode sees a Canadian angling guide share their use of fishing as a lifeline for mental wellbeing with a group of queer comedic newcomers. These newcomers include Faye Marsay, who fans will recognise from Pride, Andor and Game Of Thrones, and former DIVA cover star Rosie Jones.
“For too long, the outdoors – and fishing in particular – has only been marketed to one specific group of human beings,” said Heidi. “We want to showcase a different side of the fishing world – one that welcomes diversity, queerness, and the power of simply being present in nature for the good of our collective mental health. Get Hooked is funny, heartfelt, and deeply personal, and we hope it inspires people to find their own healing connection to the natural world.”
In April, there will also be a companion podcast, exploring how society can make the mental health benefits of being outdoors more accessible to the LGBTQIA, disabled and BIPOC communities. Like the show, the podcast will feature special guests, including Faye and the woman who plays her love interest in Andor, Verada Sethu.
