It’s been two long years since we last heard music from Lucy Dacus. Back in 2023, she, Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker had the LGBTQIA community in floods of tears following the release of boygenius‘ album, The Record. But the American singer-songwriter has had us weeping in our cars for years now and is set to do it again with her highly personal fourth album, Forever Is A Feeling.
Lucy has announced the album will be released on 28 March, but the songs were written between the autumn of 2022 and the summer of 2024. “I got kicked in the head with emotions,” says the singer. “Falling in love, falling out of love. You have to destroy things in order to create things. And I did destroy a really beautiful life.”
Where Lucy’s last album, Home Video, explores childhood and adolescence, Forever Is A Feeling dives into what it means to love as an adult. The songs frankly discuss desire, particularly Ankles, which has already been released. This is a song about wanting someone you can’t have and finding a way to let off that steam so you don’t burn from the inside out, and has been released with a beautiful music video starring Havana Rose Liu to go with it.
A key theme of the album is what it means to love knowing everyone’s time on earth is limited. When we say “forever”, we can never really mean that. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t real or meant, hence the album’s title. “You can’t capture forever,” says Lucy. “But I think we feel forever in moments. I don’t know how much time I’ve spent in forever, but I know I’ve visited.”
Another song on the album is Best Guess. Though Lucy has not released the song yet, she did put out a casting call for “hot mascs” that she wanted to feature in the music video. Following the album’s release, Lucy will also embark on a tour of North America, supported by MUNA’s Katie Gavin.
