We’ve known for years that Alex Scott will go down as one of the greats in football history. But now that is finally official. On 13 January, the former Arsenal defender was inducted into the Barclays Women’s Super League Hall of Fame.
“It was a very proud moment,” Alex told BBC Sport. She added that while her broadcasting career has been wonderful, this award is a full circle moment, bringing it back to her time as a football player. “The reason I am doing what I am doing now is because of what I managed to achieve then. It’s a time for celebration.”
During her 12-year Gunners career, the 40-year-old won 21 trophies, including a run of four trophies won in just 2007. When asked what her favourite memory of playing was, Alex highlighted the quadruple win as “no team has managed to do that” since.
In an interview with the WSL, Alex reflected on how she started to transition towards broadcasting, whilst still playing for the team. “I had to do it in the right way, and for me, that was to get a degree whilst I was still playing with Arsenal. It was hard to juggle it with training.” She continued to say that the reason she wanted to take up a position on camera was because she loved being able to bring her fellow footballers out of their shell.
Another part of her career the former footballer is proud of is opening the door for other female pundits. “What would it all be for if I wasn’t bringing anyone else through?” Opening the door has been a theme in Alex’s career, as she also founded a football academy, the first in the UK to improve routes into women’s football.
She has continued to use her platform to be vocal about social issues, talking frequently about the misogyny she experiences online and standing up for pro-LGBTQIA campaigns in football, such as wearing the OneLove armband despite FIFA banning the armband at the World Cup.
