Trans actress Karla Sofía Gascón has cemented herself as an Oscar contender by winning best actress at this year’s European Film Awards (EFAs). Her win made history, as she is the first trans woman to take home the award.

In her acceptance speech, Karla Sofía said: “There are European roots of many human rights and laws. We have been pioneers in the world in passing laws that make life better for many people.”

This is the second time the actress has made history by winning an award for her role as former cartel leader-turned human rights activist, Emilia Pérez. Back in May, the actress became the first out trans woman to win best actress at the Cannes Film Festival. Like the Cannes awards, the EFAs often indicate which European films will be celebrated at the Oscars. As such, Karla Sofía has cemented herself as a contender at this year’s awards.

As has the film for which she is nominated. It follows Emilia, a trans woman who must fake her death to escape the cartel she runs and transition safely. Despite an overall ambivalent critical response, the film has done extraordinary well at both Cannes and the EFAs. In total, it took home five awards: best director, screenplay, editing, film and, of course, actress.

Last year’s EFA best film was Justine Triet’s Anatomy Of A Fall, which went on to be nominated for several awards at the Oscars, including best film, director and actress. 2022’s best film, Triangle Of Sadness also saw similar success.
