What to watch if you liked Euphoria

Good news for Euphoria fans! The HBO Max show is set to start filming its third season in January. While the internet is swarmed with rumours about who will be returning and who won’t, one thing is certain – it’s going to be a while before the next instalment is actually on our screens.

To tide you over, here are five shows to watch if you liked Euphoria…

Skins

This is a must-watch for any Euphoria fan. Skins, which aired from 2007 to 2013, follows a group of Bristol sixth-formers making questionable decisions. Like Rue and Jules, they deal with mental health issues, explore their sexualities and take a lot of drugs.

The show, only looking at these kids while at sixth form, follows three generations. For the ultimate Euphoria experience, have a watch of gen two (seasons three and four). The sapphic relationship between Emily and Naomi is pure Rue and Jules, while Kaya Scoldelario’s Effy is so similar to the Euphoria crowd that we sometimes wonder if she was the template!

Sex Education

Here’s another teen show, but this one is a comedy. Sex Education and Euphoria came out at the same time and both feature a large and colourful cast of characters. While the Sex Ed crew may not be as wild and rebellious as the Euphoria lot – though Emma Mackey’s Maeve would fit in with both – they are a joy to watch.

The Netflix show follows teen sex therapist Otis, as he aids his schoolmates with all their sexual qualms and anxieties. Over its four seasons Otis, and co find themselves in awkward but hilarious positions and we loved every second. This is the perfect antidote if Euphoria starts to get a little too dark.

Everything Now

Everything Now is probably the closest we have to a British version of Euphoria. It follows Mia, who returns to school after being hospitalised for an eating disorder and decides to write a bucket list to make up for lost time. What’s on the list? Sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll and anything else you can name.

It’s is a bit more cheerful than Euphoria but if you’re looking for something as debauched as the American teen drama, this may be for you.

Heartbreak High

We’re jumping over to Australia with this one! If Euphoria and Sex Education had a child that was adopted by Regina George, it would be Heartbreak High. Amerie becomes an outcast at her school when she exposes all the secret hookups of everyone at her school. In comes a group of misfits that help her get back on her feet. Once again, this is more lighthearted than Euphoria, but it is sure to remind you of the series, if only because of the similarly glittery makeup.

We Are Who We Are

Take Euphoria and plant it on an American army base in Italy and you’ve got this HBO show. Fraser is moved from New York to Italy as his mothers are both stationed at an army base in Chioggia. There, he meets Caitlin, a seemingly confident teen who is struggling with her gender identity. What follows includes drugs, kids screaming at their parents and what can only be described as “Euphoria vibes”.
