In celebration of Intersex Awareness Day (26 October), why not settle in for a movie night with films that authentically portray intersex characters or were shaped by intersex voices? These films delve into the complexities of identity and the experiences of intersex individuals, offering nuanced, respectful, and often uplifting depictions. Each of these films has been lauded for bringing greater visibility to intersex people in ways that are sensitive and affirming. Here are four must-watch films that honour intersex experiences.

XXY (2007)

Argentine director Lucía Puenzo’s XXY is an internationally acclaimed drama that portrays the journey of Alex, a 15-year-old intersex teenager living in Uruguay. Played by Inés Efron, Alex navigates the emotional challenges of adolescence while resisting society’s expectations of gender. The film delicately explores themes of self-acceptance, family relationships, and the tension between personal autonomy and societal norms.

Every Body (2023)

The recent documentary Every Body, directed by Julie Cohen, shines a light on the lives of three intersex activists: Alicia Roth Weigel, Sean Saifa Wall, and River Gallo. Using archival footage alongside personal storytelling, Every Body is both educational and inspiring, giving viewers insight into the activism that drives intersex rights forward today. Cohen’s documentary is an excellent resource for viewers looking to learn more about the systemic challenges faced by the intersex community while also celebrating resilience, joy, and identity on one’s own terms. It’s a raw, celebratory, and empowering watch.

Ponyboi (2019)

Co-directed by River Gallo and Sadé Clacken Joseph, Ponyboi is a short film that explores the life of an intersex character played by Gallo. This beautifully shot film follows Ponyboi, a sex worker and laundromat attendant, through a night of self-discovery and romance. With a tender approach, Ponyboi draws viewers into an authentic and heartfelt experience of self-acceptance and the courage it takes to embrace one’s identity. This groundbreaking short film was the first narrative film to feature an intersex character written and played by an intersex person – an essential watch for visibility and representation.

Why not also watch the full feature length version that came out earlier this year, starring Victoria Pedretti, Dylan O’Brien, and Indya Moore?

No Box for Me. An Intersex Story (2018)

A unique documentary by French filmmaker Floriane Devigne, No Box for Me. An Intersex Story follows M and Deborah, two young intersex individuals navigating life, relationships, and identity in a society that insists on binary norms. Through intimate interviews and gentle cinematography, the film highlights the freedom and complexity of life outside strict gender expectations. Devigne’s sensitivity as a director ensures that the stories are portrayed without judgement or sensationalism, making it an illuminating watch that challenges viewers to rethink the boxes we so often place around identity.
