Asexuality is often overlooked in the media, but several shows are breaking barriers and showcasing diverse asexual characters. From heartfelt journeys of self-discovery to authentic representations of asexual lives, these characters illuminate the complexities of identity. Here are four notable shows featuring asexual characters you won’t want to miss!

Abbi Singh – The Imperfects

In the Netflix series The Imperfects, Rhianna Jagpal brings to life the character of Abbi Singh, an ambitious undergrad with dreams of becoming a scientist. Early in the series, Abbi comes out as asexual, providing much-needed representation for the asexual sapphic community. Her journey is marked by a quest for identity in a world that often prioritises romantic relationships and sexual attraction.

Abbi’s character not only challenges stereotypes surrounding asexuality but also illustrates the importance of pursuing one’s passions and ambitions without conforming to societal expectations. Throughout the show, her relationships with friends and family are explored, demonstrating that love and connection can exist in many forms, extending beyond the traditional narrative of romance.

Isaac Henderson – Heartstopper

Heartstopper Season Two brought audiences on an emotional rollercoaster with Isaac Henderson, portrayed by Tobie Donovan. As a teenager navigating the complexities of friendship and romance, Isaac grapples with understanding his feelings, leading to significant character development. In a pivotal moment, he discovers Angela Chen’s book Ace, which profoundly impacts his understanding of his identity as asexual.

This representation is vital as it highlights the journey of self-discovery many asexual individuals experience. Isaac’s exploration of his emotions is portrayed with sensitivity, resonating with viewers who may see their own struggles reflected in his story. The series beautifully captures the importance of acceptance and understanding in a world that often overlooks asexuality.

O – Sex Education

The final season of Sex Education introduced a fresh perspective with the character of O, played by Thaddea Graham. O is a sex therapist whose character was developed in collaboration with asexual activist Yasmin Benoit, ensuring an authentic and respectful representation of asexuality. O’s presence in the series helps to normalise discussions around asexuality, providing a safe space for characters to explore their identities and experiences.

Liv Flaherty – Emmerdale

In a groundbreaking moment for British television, the beloved soap Emmerdale made history with the character of Liv Flaherty, played by Isobel Steele. Liv’s journey of self-discovery culminated in her revealing that she didn’t “get” sex, marking her as the first-ever asexual character in a major UK soap opera. This portrayal has been praised by viewers for its authenticity and relatability, as Liv navigates her feelings in a world that often emphasises sexual relationships. Her character’s exploration of asexuality is handled with care, allowing for meaningful conversations about identity, connection, and acceptance.
