Bella Ramsey, star of The Last Of Us, jumped on Instagram to share how trans film Boys Don’t Cry made them feel “very privileged”.
The non-binary actor posted a caption to Instagram about the 1999 film on 22 September. They said: “I watched Boys Don’t Cry recently and realised how not long ago trans acceptance started to happen.”
They added: “It made me feel very privileged to live in this time of change, where tolerance, learning, love and understanding are beginning to champion”. Ramsey ended the post with two hashtags, #TransLivesMatter and #ProtectTransKids.
The message appeared as a caption to a photo dump of pictures either of Ramsey, who turns 21 this week, or taken by them. The actor came out as non-binary last year in an interview with The New York Times, where they said: “Being gendered isn’t something I particularly like but in terms of pronouns, I really couldn’t care less.”
Boys Don’t Cry, the film Ramsey reacted to, tells the real-life story of a young trans man who was the victim of a brutal hate crime. Hilary Swank, who is a cisgender woman, won an Oscar for her playing Brandon Teena in the film but has since said a trans actor would have been better.
In 2020, she told Variety: “We now have a bunch of trans actors who would obviously be a lot more right for the role.”
